Limits and retesting
Operating-system shortcuts may be reserved before the webpage sees them. Focus loss clears the display rather than diagnosing a stuck key. Compare the general Keyboard Tester and another application if needed.
Common combination-check situations
Movement plus an action
Hold two movement keys and add Space, Shift, Q, E, or another ordinary action key. Watch the current set rather than only the peak.
One key disappears from a combination
Reset and build the same combination one key at a time. Repeat after changing only the browser or keyboard connection.
A system shortcut is missing
Some shortcuts are reserved before webpages receive them. A missing reserved combination does not isolate a keyboard cause.
A repeatable combination sequence
- Reset and focus the marked area before every comparison run.
- Press and hold the first key, then add one key at a time while watching the current display.
- Release keys in reverse order and confirm the current count returns to zero.
- Repeat the identical order three times before changing the browser, port, connection, layout, or keyboard.
- Use manufacturer documentation for NKRO claims and device-specific matrix behavior.
What each number means
- Current
- Keys with browser-visible keydown state that have not yet produced a matching keyup in the focused area.
- Peak
- Largest current set observed since Reset; not an NKRO rating.
- Unique observed
- Different browser key codes seen during the session, independent of whether they were simultaneous.
Frequently asked questions
Does a high peak count prove NKRO?
No. It only shows how many keys were simultaneously visible to this browser during this combination. It does not test every matrix position, certify a specification, or bypass operating-system shortcuts.
Why does a shortcut not appear?
The operating system, browser, keyboard layout, accessibility feature, or application shortcut may handle a combination before the page receives it. Avoid destructive system shortcuts and compare ordinary combinations first.
Why are pressed keys cleared when the page loses focus?
A keyup event can be missed after focus moves elsewhere. Clearing the display prevents a stale visual state; it is not evidence that a key is physically stuck.
Are the exact keys saved in a local report?
No. The report stores aggregate counts such as peak simultaneous keys, unique browser-visible keys, and total keydowns. It does not store the key sequence or typed text.
